New Orleans Needs Youth Mentoring Connection
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina the New Orleans was forever changed. The population has never recovered and the demographics shifted. New Orleans became a testing ground for the Charter School movement with some great new schools but a lot of unknowns.
“The city has a poverty rate of 29%, nearly twice the national average of 15%. In 2007, New Orleans had a 21% poverty rate. Child poverty is 42% in the city, according to the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center; the U.S. rate is 23%. Unemployment in the metro area rose from 3% in October 2007 to 6.5% in 2012. Post-Katrina housing is less affordable, and violent crime is still twice the national rate”

Much of the violent crime is committed by and on young African American men – many of whom were never able to complete school and secure a sustainable job.
Youth Mentoring Connection is Uniquely Positioned to Make a Big Difference in New Orleans
For more than 10 years Youth Mentoring Connection has been matching mentors with the youth of Los Angeles. More than 3000 mentoring pairs have participated in YMC’s innovative mentoring model, which includes a series of facilitated workshops designed to enhance the mentoring relationship.
YMC has built lasting relationships with national Corporations such as HBO, Warner Bros and Viacom as well as partnerships with the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office and the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. Their unique model has proven particularly effective with older youth who were previously struggling to stay in school.
Youth Mentoring Connection – New Orleans Presents the Ideal Opportunity to Expand YMC’s Highly Successful Model
New Orleans provides a unique opportunity for the growth of Youth Mentoring Connection into a National Organization. There are several unique circumstances that make New Orleans the logical next step
1. Post Katrina New Orleans has seen great investment in schools but the focus has been on Elementary and Middle School Youth. There is relatively little provision for High School and older Youth. Youth Mentoring Connections programs service a dire need for a city with one of the highest murder rates in the nation.
2. One of Youth Mentoring Connections major strengths is the depth of its relationship with the Television and Movie Studios. Nicknamed “Hollywood South” New Orleans has become one of busiest destinations for filming in the US.
Ideal Staffing Opportunity - The Right Leader for Success
A former manager with Youth Mentoring Connection in Los Angeles, Stewart Young has been at the leading edge of youth mentoring in New Orleans for the last 3 years and has all the relationships needed to make the program sustainable.
